ABOUT FINAL STRAW
The brainchild of Cornwall resident, business woman and environmentalist Pat Smith, The Final Straw Cornwall was launched in the summer of 2017. Pat explains her passion for the cause and the sense of responsibility she feels:
“I founded the Final Straw to try and raise awareness of the catastrophic damage we are doing to our oceans from our casual consumption of single use plastics. I feel I have a responsibility to my children and grandchildren to do something about it.”
Pat is acutely aware that it is her generation that has created most of the 88 billion tonnes of plastic produced since 1948 and still existing on the Earth today. The mission is simple, make Cornwall plastic straw free. To do that, Pat and her dedicated team of volunteers manage and fuel the campaign with pure passion and the aim to engage with local businesses across the hospitality and tourist sector to give up plastic straws.
EVERY PLASTIC STRAW ON THE PLANET RIGHT NOW, WILL OUTLIVE EVERYONE READING THESE WORDS – BUT YOU CAN BE THE CHANGE!
Cornwall is our home, a remarkable county which is world renowned for its rugged coastal beauty. With over 300 miles of coastline and a worldwide reputation for hospitality, food and ocean-side adventure, Cornwall is a community perfectly positioned to say no to single-use plastic and influence others to do the same.
As well as sending a message to the world that we are starting to tackle the threat of single use plastic, the Final Straw can also save businesses money if they stop purchasing and giving single-use plastic items away. They also get a wonderful thank you across the campaign’s social media platforms and on its website for supporting the Final Straw Cornwall campaign.

Our campaign to rid Cornwall of single use plastic straws and raise awareness of the damage plastics are causing to the environment is gathering momentum.
Plastic Free Cornwall
Single-use plastic will outlive everyone reading these words and harm not only marine life, but our own health too, as well as contributing to climate change. Let’s say No to single-use plastics – they are literally costing the earth..
We aim to raise awareness of the catastrophic damage we are doing to our oceans from our casual consumption of single use plastics and what positive actions we can take to make a difference. From changing our habits, upcycling, recycling to beach cleans, find out how you can help.
We aim to empower people to make positive changes and take action in making a better world; there is no ‘Planet-B’. We all have a responsibility to our planet and to future generations. If each individual makes a positive change, think about what we can do as a collective!
There are many other amazing campaigns and organisations with close synergy to Final Straw that do incredible work raising awareness of ecological and environmental crisis. We are proud to collaborate and work with some amazing groups. There is always strength in numbers and unity.
