MAKING CORNWALL
SINGLE-USE PLASTIC FREE

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission is to support Cornish businesses to move away from using plastic, particularly single-use plastics.

Why
stop
using
single-use
plastic?

In Cornwall it can take less than a day for plastic litter dropped by a drain to wash into our ocean.

In the sea it breaks down into micro-plastics to cause terrible harm to marine life and enter the food chain — including contaminating our own food sources.

In addition, the manufacture, use and disposal of plastic contributes significantly to the production of greenhouse gases — plastic has a particularly big carbon footprint.

Most plastic is manufactured using petroleum and the extraction, distillation, then transport and eventual disposal, recycling or incineration all add to the release of carbon dioxide. It is estimated that at the current rate, emissions from plastics will reach 17% of the global carbon budget by 2050.

We are working with Cornish businesses to support them in finding sustainable alternatives to single use plastic.

KEY OBJECTIVES

Making Cornwall Single-Use Plastic Free

Community icon

Building Community

We are creating a community of restaurants, cafes, pubs, hotels, BnB’s, hospitality venues and businesses in Cornwall that are working to move away from using single use plastic. This network of sustainable businesses is an asset to Cornwall. This network of sustainable businesses will support Cornwall Council’s decision to declare a Climate Emergency by demonstrating reduced carbon emissions.

Changing Behaviour

Through our high profile campaigns and networks we engage the people of Cornwall in reducing their use of single-use plastics. Changing the behaviour of the public works hand in hand with supporting businesses to become more sustainable; by using refillable cups when they order drinks for example.

Celebrating Success

Our long term goal has always been to celebrate success wherever we see it so that businesses and the public want to join us. In turn we influence our visitors from around the UK and beyond, changing their thinking and behaviour regarding single-use plastic products.

Cornwall?
Why

Make a difference

Cornwall is our home, a remarkable county which is world renowned for its rugged coastal beauty. With over 300 miles of coastline and a worldwide reputation for hospitality, food and ocean-side adventure, Cornwall is a community perfectly positioned to say no to single-use plastic and influence others to do the same.

As well as sending a message to the world that we are starting to tackle the threat of single-use plastic, the Final Straw can also save businesses money if they switch to alternatives such as refillable cups which customers bring themselves. They also get a page on our website, a presence on our map and a wonderful thank you across the campaign’s social media platforms and on its website for supporting the Final Straw Cornwall campaign.

OUR FOCUS

Our campaign to rid Cornwall of single-use plastic and raise awareness of the damage plastics are causing to the environment is gathering momentum.

Plastic Free Cornwall

Single-use plastic will outlive everyone reading these words and harm not only marine life, but our own health too, as well as contributing to climate change. Let’s say No to single-use plastics – they are literally costing the earth..

Education

We aim to raise awareness of the catastrophic damage we are doing to our oceans from our casual consumption of single use plastics and what positive actions we can take to make a difference. From changing our habits, upcycling, recycling to beach cleans, find out how you can help.

Empowerment

We aim to empower people to make positive changes and take action in making a better world; there is no ‘Planet-B’. We all have a responsibility to our planet and to future generations. If each individual makes a positive change, think about what we can do as a collective!

Collaboration

There are many other amazing campaigns and organisations with close synergy to Final Straw that do incredible work raising awareness of ecological and environmental crisis. We are proud to collaborate and work with some amazing groups. There is always strength in numbers and unity.
