Residents at Rosewarne Residential Home have eliminated the use of plastic straws and have signed up to the Final Straw campaign. Below are Faith and Rachel who have agreed for their photos to be used.
Rosewarne residents and staff are committed to reducing single use plastic but need to use straws to promote independence, this is probably the case with many people with disabilities.
Residents can use up to ten plastic straws per day and we were aware that this adds up to a significant number over weeks and years.
We researched alternatives such as metal and paper straws, but these were not suitable, then we found silicone straws – these are washable, the right diameter and we have been using the same straws now for over six months, so they appear to be durable. We are proud to say that we no longer buy plastic straws for the service and are spreading the word to other services in the organisation.
