We have been steadily gathering momentum across Cornwall but now we’re starting to make waves in a big way…
We’re surging forward and are super excited at the support we’ve been receiving in our fight against single-use plastic straws, with Britain’s Best Beach becoming the latest straw-free crusader.
Lusty Glaze Beach, a secluded haven for sun-worshippers, holiday makers and locals that was awarded the best beach accolade by The Sunday Times, has committed to our cause, binning single-use plastic straws in favour of eco-friendly paper ones.
We had a chat with Andi Milson, Operations Director at Lusty Glaze, about their relation-ship with the ocean and why they’re getting behind The Final Straw Cornwall…
What made you want to get involved with The Final Straw Cornwall?
Our business is unique because of our spectacular location – we are right on the sand! We owe so much of our success to the ocean and our relationship with it. The problems that plastic causes our oceans are overwhelming and we realised that instead of being part of the problem, we could make a simple change that would help in a significant way.
How have you made the switch from plastic to paper straws?
First off we moved to biodegradable straws, but after doing some research we learned that these straws only break down if you have a solid composting system in place. We quickly reevaluated and moved to paper straws, which are the best alternative currently available.
However, they are a lot more expensive than plastic straws! We won’t give them out with every soft drink; instead, we will only use paper straws when they are specifically asked for.
There are bound to be a few customers with children who are disappointed that we aren’t using bendy plastic straws, but imagine their disappointment when the next generation don’t want to visit the beach because its awash with plastic! Ultimately, we believe that any teething problems our decision causes will be far outweighed by the long-term benefits.
Why do you believe in our cause?
We believe that Cornwall can lead the way towards eradicating the ocean’s plastic pollu-tion – the whole team at Lusty Glaze is behind it!
Cornwall is riding the crest of the wave; so much so that we could become the first plastic straw-free county in the UK within the next 18 months. Issues around plastic pollution have never been more in focus; it’s an incredibly exciting time to be getting involved and highlighting the impact single-use plastic has been having on our oceans and our environment.
